“With heavy hearts, we are devastated to share the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was just 14 years old and left us far too soon after falling ill while on vacation with several other family members. Though we have so many unanswered questions, we take some solace in knowing he passed peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” Brett and Jessica Gardner said in a statement released by the Yankees.
Remembering Miller
Described as a beloved son and brother, Miller was known for his infectious smile and love for life. He had a passion for football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing, and he cherished time spent with his family and friends.
Yankees Express Their Grief
The Yankees organization expressed its deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “Words feel insignificant in the face of such an unimaginable loss. Brett, Jessica, and their sons, Hunter and Miller, have been a part of this organization for nearly two decades. We grieve alongside them and offer our unconditional support during this difficult time. Miller had a spark in his eyes, a feisty and outgoing personality, and a warm and loving nature. May he rest in peace.”
A Passion for Football
Miller, who played football for his South Carolina school, was seen in a highlight last fall wearing No. 11—the same number his father wore during his Yankees career—while running in a touchdown.
Brett Gardner’s Legacy
Brett Gardner spent 14 seasons with the Yankees, winning a World Series with the team in 2009 before retiring in 2021. He was a respected leader in the clubhouse, close with players like Aaron Judge, and admired by coaches and teammates alike.
Yankees Manager Aaron Boone’s Tribute
Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who coached Gardner for four seasons, expressed his grief on Sunday. “We’re heartbroken. We talk about being family all the time, and even though Brett has been retired for a few years, that connection never fades. Our thoughts are with the Gardner family.”
