Jimmy Johnson, the iconic Pro Football Hall of Fame coach renowned for his Super Bowl victories with the Dallas Cowboys and a national championship with the Miami Hurricanes, has announced his retirement from Fox Sports. This decision marks the end of a 31-year association with the network, where Johnson became a beloved figure in NFL broadcasting.

At 81, Johnson announced his retirement during an interview on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” saying his time working for Fox Sports was among the most fun times of his career. “The most fun I ever had in my career, that’s counting Super Bowls and national championships, was at Fox Sports,” he said. Looking back on his choice, Johnson said it had been on his mind for some years and was difficult. He said, “I have had to make a somewhat tough choice. Having considered it for the past four or five years, I have chosen to step back from Fox.”

Shortly following his leaving the Dallas Cowboys, Johnson started his broadcasting career with Fox Sports in 1994. He departed momentarily in 1996 to coach the Miami Dolphins, then returned to Fox in 2002 and became a regular on the “Fox NFL Sunday” pregame program. The show’s continuing popularity was much enhanced by his perceptive analysis, engaging demeanor, and friendship with fellow hosts Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Michael Strahan.

“Jimmy served as an inspiration to generations of football fans with his legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight, and signature humor,” Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks said in acknowledging Johnson’s influence.

Two Super Bowl wins with the Dallas Cowboys and a national title with the University of Miami mark Johnson’s remarkable coaching career. 2020 saw him admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, therefore securing his reputation as among the best coaches in the game.

Fans and colleagues alike will remember Jimmy Johnson’s impact as both a coach and commentator even as he moves away from the broadcast booth. His love of the game and original observations have permanently changed the football scene.
